  1. What is karate?
  2. Karate is a weaponless means of self-defense, which consists of techniques of blocking or thwarting an attack and punching, striking, or kicking.

  3. What do the word "Karate" mean?
  4. The word "Karate" is actually a contraction of 2 Japanese words, "kara" and "te." "Kara" means "empty" and "te" means "hands."  So, Karate literally means "empty hand."
     

  5. What is the difference between Tae Kwon Do, Kung Fu and Karate?
  6. There are more similarities than differences between all styles of martial arts. We all kick, punch, and block and even bow to show respect. It is the philosophy of each individual instructor that makes each martial arts school unique. Therefore, it is important to visit prospective schools before enrolling to determine if you are comfortable with the instructor's philosophy and teaching style.
     

  7. What is the goal of karate?
  8. The most important goal of karate is to strengthen people mentally and physically through strong, disciplined training, so that better harmony among people is realized.
     

  9. Why is meditation practiced in karate training?
  10. Meditation in karate training helps with focusing (unite the mind, body and spirit) on task at hand. It is a great way to calm the mind and prepare the body for sincere practice. When practiced properly, meditation refreshes one's mind and ready to see many possibilities.
     

  11. Are there age requirements to train in karate?
  12.  The only requirement for karate training is a willing mind. Women, men, and children aged 4 or older who can safely engage in moderate physical activity can learn karate. Children must know the difference between right and wrong. Learning self-defense requires the practice of self-control. Adults of all ages appreciate improved flexibility, fitness, stress relief, and confidence gained through the development of personal protection skills. You are never too old to begin karate training.
     

  13. Will karate help me get into shape?
  14. YES! In our classes, students not only learn self-defense, awareness, and self-control, but they also attain high fitness levels from the vigorous training. At the same time, students are allowed to progress at a rate that is most comfortable for them.
     

  15. How long does it take to learn karate?
  16. You can learn a great deal in even one day. However, there is really no limit in the learning and mastery of karate techniques. The more you practice, the more you will improve. In the beginning, at YMK Karate, students are taught the most basic techniques first and as student progress more advanced techniques will be taught.
     

  17. How long does it take to earn a black belt?
  18. First degree black belt in karate is awarded to those who have mastered the basic techniques. Adult students who attend class 2 - 3 times per week, make up missed classes, and practice diligently at home, may earn a black belt in 2 - 5 years, with 3 years being average. The time may be longer for young children as the areas of attitude, respect, self-discipline, self-control, and personal responsibility are taken into account prior to promotion.
     

  19. How do I choose a karate school that's right for me or my child?
  20. The YMK Karate encourages you or your child to visit and try out a class before joining. Take a close look at the personality of the instructor. Talk to the other parents and talk to the instructor. Very carefully observe the atmosphere created by the instructor because this is where the attitude of karate is taught.
     

  21. Will karate benefit my child?
  22. Karate produces lifelong commitments to health and personal integrity. The YMK Karate  teach respect for self and others. Observe the eagerness of our children as they respectfully approach the practice floor and instructor to join their friends in disciplined and meaningful learning. Parents tell our instructors of improvements in their children's attitudes toward responsibilities at home and school. Karate provides the tools for strengthening both the mind and the body. The YMK Karate teaches children to exercise their self-control.
     

  23. How can karate training improve my child's grades?
  24.  The structure of a good karate class emphasizes the development of good listening skills. Respecting those in authority and the rights of classmates develops good citizenship. Concentration and self-discipline improve study habits. All these skills have a positive influence on a child's academic performance.
     

  25. Do I have to wear a karate uniform (gi)?
  26. YMK Karate do not require beginning students to purchase a karate gi. Any loose-fitting clothing that allows freedom of movement will suffice. A gi is required by the time of your first rank test, which is at least 3 months after starting training. The gi allows for maximum movement and helps contribute to the serious tone of the class.
