Sensei Hess began karate in 1980 under Sensei Bill Olson. He tested for Shodan in 1987 and earned his  Nidan in 1991 in a dual test with Sensei Walt Juneau. While working in California Sensei Hess worked out in kempo karate. He visits other dojos and styles regularly and brings a wide variety knowledge to his students.
